BINGE WATCH

The YouTuber-led record label Heard Well has announced two new podcasts in partnership with the audio platform Castbox. The company has become known for releasing compilation albums from popular influencers including Tyler Oakley, Kingsley, and the Heard Well co-founder, Connor Franta. The two new podcasts don’t stray too far from that compilation model. Heard Well Now, which has already launched with 80 (!) episodes, pairs popular digital creators with musical artists for discussions about the music industry and a performance. The second podcast, Heard Well Etc., will be made up of artists interviews from major music festivals and events across the country, like Coachella, Bonnaroo, or Austin City Limits.

YOUNG MONEY

Popular crowdfunding platform GoFundMe acquired YouCaring, a charitable crowdfunding startup and one of its rivals. GoFundMe seems to be hellbent on owning the entire charitable crowdfunding space, as it bought CrowdRise in January 2017 and it will now own YouCaring, which previously acquired Indiegogo’s Generosity.com in January of this year. The GoFundMe/YouCaring acquisition creates a combined community of 60 million donors across 19 countries. The charitable crowdfunding space has been facing encroachment on their turf from big dogs like Facebook, which allows you to donate your birthday to a charity, and Amazon, which, as we covered, now allows you to scream at Alexa to give some of your money to an organization of your choice.

BIG BUSINESS

AMC has secured the first license for Saudi Arabian movie theaters, and it plans to have 100 theaters up and running by 2030, 40 of which in the next five years. Saudi Arabia and its Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ended a 30-year-long ban on cinemas in March of this year. The country currently has zero commercial theaters, but that will change on April 18 with the opening of a theater in the capital city of Riyadh thanks to the AMC agreement. The conservative country will likely go through some growing pains as it expands its film industry, but this is a great growth opportunity for both cinema and Saudi Arabia. AMC’s CEO Adam Aron estimated that the Saudi film market could earn $1 billion in revenue annually over the next five years.
